What kinds of questions can I ask here?

The goal of Manism is to become an information repository for men who are focused on leading better lives. That's a deliberately broad category, because no one should be put off by assuming that what they have to ask or say is too irrelevant. Just make sure your questions are as short as possible, precise, and ideally, able to be generalized.

For questions about using the site, simply tag your question with support. For suggestions on improving it, write a post and tag it with suggestion. Feel free to vote up any suggestions that you like: While there are no guarantees, every one is read and absorbed.

What should I avoid in my questions and answers?

Manism is a Q&A community - it is not a forum or a discussion group. Please avoid holding debates in your answers, as they tend to dilute their utility. For brief discussions, feel free to use the commenting facility.

Although no topic (as long as it's relevant to the community) is taboo, the site maintains a zero-tolerance approach when it comes to content that would be deemed inappropriate or offensive by the average user. Such posts will be deleted and may result in one's account being disabled.

What happens after I've posted a question?

After you've posted a question, other users will immediately be able to see and respond to it. You can view their answers or comments from your profile page or by doing a search. If you are asked by users in the comments section to clarify something, you may do so by clicking on the edit link just below your original post.

When posting, you are encouraged to vote up those answers or comments you consider the most helpful by clicking on the arrow to the left of them. Questions, answers and comments are normally sorted by vote score, so the most highly voted float to the top. Other users will also be able to cast votes on all of these.

When asking a question, you should eventually decide which answer you deem the most helpful and mark it as the accepted one by clicking on the check box outline to its left. This lets other people know that you have received a good answer to your question. Doing this is helpful as it shows other members that you are getting value from the community.

What are Tags?

The ability to tag your post is a great way to sharpen its context and derive better responses from those who are interested in the particular topic. Posts can be viewed by tag subjects under the "Tags" tab at the top of the page. By subscribing to e-mail notifications of your "Interesting Tags" in the sidebar, you will receive e-mails containing questions that match your interests. By entering tags into "Ignored Tags," you will be filtering out future questions containing those tags.

Who moderates this community?

The short answer is: You. Manism is moderated by its users. The reputation system allows users to earn rights to perform a variety of moderation tasks, including cleaning up the content to ensure it remains valuable to others.

How does the reputation system work?

Reputation is gained by contributing interesting questions and useful answers. With the exception of all comments, when contributions are upvoted, the user who posts them will accrue "reputation points," which serve as a rough measure of the trust placed in that user by the community. On the other hand, if contributions are misleading or unhelpful, they will be downvoted. Moderation abilities are gradually assigned to users based on their accumulation of points.

Each vote in favor will generate 15 points, while each vote against will subtract 2 points. There is a limit of 200 points that can be accumulated per question or answer. The table below explains reputation requirements for each type of moderation ability:

  • Add comments -> 0
  • Delete comments -> 400
  • Close own questions -> 60
  • Reopen own questions -> 120
  • Retag questions -> 150
  • Flag questions -> 15
  • Edit any answer -> 400
  • Open any closed question -> 600

An important ability that all users achieve after their first upvote (15 pts) is to be able to flag a post by clicking on the "report" link beneath it. Flagging posts as inappropriate, abusive, spam, misleading etc. is a vital function of the community. At 3 flags, a post will be removed from the main page; at 5, it will be deleted permanently.

To register, do I need to create a new password?

No. You are free to log in using your Facebook or Google accounts.

Why can other people can edit my questions?

Since the goal of Manism is to become an incredible knowledge base, questions and answers can be edited like wiki pages by experienced users, which improves the overall quality of the content. If this approach is not for you, we respect your choice.

How can I help the site to grow?

Although we are making constant efforts to attract experts from various domains to provide the highest quality contributions, you can - and are encouraged - to enhance this process by referring friends to the site who could increase the amount of valuable content. An easy way to get the word out is to share particular posts that you like via Facebook or Twitter by clicking on the appropriate link.
