I am traveling to France with my girlfriend and was told I would receive better treatment if I actually attempted to speak the language. Is that true?

If you're going to Paris it's probably not worth it. Enough people speak English there that you shouldn't have any trouble. If you're going to rural areas or southern France, it's definitely worth picking up a few basics before you go. I'd say take a phrasebook with you and refer to it, or download Michel Thomas' audio conversation classes! They're a great starter and because it's audio it doesn't feel as hard as a textbook learning.
