What is the difference between whiskey, scotch and bourbon?

I heard that whiskey, scotch and bourbon are essentially the same drink. What is the difference between the three?

You heard right ... sometimes I think they just like to confuse us.

Technically, there is no difference between whisky and scotch. Scotch is made in Scotland - and whisky is made elsewhere. Similarly, bourbon must be made in the U.S.

Scotch and whisky are both barley based and barrel aged. Bourbon is made and aged in the same way, but is mainly made from corn.

Scotch and bourbon are types of whisky (as they are all made from grain.)
