I've heard that taking a first date to a scary movie actually makes the relationship more likely to succeed in the long run. Is that true?

It depends on the girl. In my experience going to a horror movie can definitely be an aphrodisiac because of the high emotions it stirs up in a couple. Also the girl may want to bond with you more because she's scared.
The best way to figure out whether this is a good first date idea is to ask her. Just bring up the topic. A lot of the time the girl will say she either loves or hates horror movies and you have your answer.

Agree with Dwight on this- they can be great because it puts her in a state of arousal. See, to your brain emotion is emotion is emotion. The only difference between the different emotions like fear, excitement, anger, and attraction is the context. When you experience any strong emotion your body goes into an arousal state, and when you experience that state in a shared space with other people you become much closer with those people.
Plus you get to be the big strong man she can cling to when she gets scared from the movie.
