Interesting question Tommy, but I doubt if it can be answered per se; one can only guess. Having said that I would say that the average guy these days owns almost nothing but jeans.
We've come a long time since the late 1800's when they were created for cowboys and from the 1950's when teenagers fell in love with them. Jeans are now the "average guy uniform".
I'm going to use myself as an example and say about a dozen: 3 old raggedy pair for mechanic work, painting etc, 6 good pair for work, and 3 really nice pair for dating.

Yea, 12 sounds about right. I've been lower but not much higher. I'm married so every day is a date no matter what I wear.

For a very long time, I only had 2 pairs at most. I started wearing camo or black Cargo pants/shorts a lot and got away from wearing jeans as much (yes I'm a musician). But recently started wearing more and have 4 pairs now. Most I've ever owned at once before wearing any out.
