I've often read that solid eye contact is a great way to let a girl know you're interested. On the other hand, I was smacked by my Mum as a child for staring at people, so I've developed a bit of a Pavlovian aversion to doing this.
What's the verdict? How long can/should you maintain eye contact without coming off as creepy?

well I've been taught that the best time for eye contact in a conversation, or an interview, is about 3 seconds. more than that can seem a little weird, etc. and it's ok to look away for a little and so on. now speaking about making eye contact with a girl you like, I'm guessing it's the same.. but the best, and probably only way, is to use language to let her know you are interested. start a conversation instead, and she'll know you're interested if you are persistent, and make her laugh too for bonus points.

They say the eyes are the window to the soul.
I've found that locking eyes with a girl is one of the most POWERFUL ways to communicate with her.
If you're at a bar and lock eyes with a girl: hold it........ hold it........... a little longer..... until she looks away (trust me it will feel like an eternity).
You'll know you're doing it right if you have butterflies in your stomach.
Now go talk to her.
"You know you can't look at me like that and not say hey ;)".
Cheers,
Mayhem

Personally, I think you should try to avoid it. Sure it's nice to have an IOI to spur you on to actually approach the girl, but that isn't what you'd call "optimum strategy" exactly. If you like the look of someone, you shouldn't need encouragement from them to approach. If anything, you should work on your approach anxiety instead of looking for validation before you start speaking to a girl.

It's a great question - one that I'm not entirely sure of the answer to, to be perfectly honest - but I will say that a smile goes a long way. At worst, you're likely to come off as annoying (rather than creepy); at best, you'll have a found a new friend.

People clearly dont know the power of Eye Contact
Look into one an eye and dont break the eye contact EVER !!! if you break it, its like a form of flinching women sub-consciously look for that.
Always look someone in the eye it really helps you connect to them and asserts your position as Alpha Male.

yep it is!
Being able to show sexual intent through your eyes works wonders. Being able to hold eye contact also conveys confidence, while breaking eye contact can show submissiveness, anxiousness and makes it look like you have something to hide.
I think eye contact only comes across creepy if you stare, without break. If shes looking into your eyes and you into hers theres no problem. If she breaks eye contact its usually good to avert your eyes and look at something else for a bit, before reengaging in eye contact later.
Theres a guy who taught me that projection is reflection. Like if you smile at someone, it makes them smile back, or the same can be said for yawning.
If you are attracted/aroused by a girl, your pupils can actually dialate, and if you project this into her eyes you can dialate her pupils making her feel attracted to you. Of course this doesnt always work but its definitely worth a shot.
Also sometime it might make a girl feel uncomfortable but this isnt always a bad thing. Sometimes when girls really like a guy they can come off awkward and uncomfortable, just like us boys.

I pretty much agree with most of what's been said so far but I'll add my thoughts too onto this. First of, regarding the 3 seconds thing, you can definitely hold eye contact for way longer. Here's a tip, if you're not comfortable with eye contact or its not something you're used to, when you're going about your day to day life and you end up holding eye contact with someone, hold that contact until they look away first. It's great practice for holding eye contact and getting rid of that awkward feeling you can sometimes get with it. Similarly with women, some guys feel awkward holding eye contact. This is because holding eye contact with girls can build a lot of sexual tension. A lot of people aren't comfortable with this tension, but definitely get used to it and keep it there as it will do wonders for your results with women!
When listening to people, I'm picking one eye and just keeping contact. It shows attention and focus on what they're saying. When I'm talking to girls, I'll mostly hold eye contact but not 100%. I'm going to break and look away as I'm thinking about what I'm saying etc. It's more natural that way than literally just keeping the eye contact. Though when it's time to take it sexual, or to express sexual intent, thats when I give the eye contact (and other signs of sexual intent too such as pausing, slowing down speech etc). Now I said that you want to hold eye contact with people when listening to them and this is generally good advice. However, if you're wanting to show disinterest to a girl or just generally mess with her, you can deliberately act disinterested by not holding the eye contact and looking around. So you see how eye contact plays different roles and can portray different things when talking to girls.
Lastly, when you say the best way to express intent is through your words, its a bit of both. I'll generally be direct when I first talk to a girl so she knows why I'm talking to her. But I'll also convey intent by the way I act, my eye contact, and the way I talk. It depends on the situation and the girl. But definitely get practicing the eye contact. Its very powerful and when you can start to create sexual tension with girls just with eye contact, your results will really start to improve and you'll notice your interactions with women changing to that more sexual vibe.
Hope this helps!
